  • Also called adjustable hitch; this type of hitch tends to jam, which is desirable when work is left unattended. It was once used by cotton brokers in New Bedford to tie samples they took from mill to mill. The hitch allowed brokers to open and close packages when needed, but the packages would remain secured when left alone during travel.
